Commemorative medallion of the transatlantic Duilio, memory of the journey faced by grandparents.
The medallion belongs to the private memories of the Vallarella-Fossa family, descendants of Italian grandparents from the provinces of Bari and Parma, who emigrated to Argentina in the city of Rosario.
On July 28, 1913, the Gio. Ansaldo & C shipyard in Sestri Ponente received an invitation from the Italian General Navigation Company to contribute to the supply of a fast liner for the Genoa-Buenos Aires route. From this project will be born the Duilio, a steamship of 22,000 tonnes, more than double that of any passenger ship ever built in Italy, the largest in the world on the Plata route, flagship of the Mediterranean fleets.
Due to the outbreak of the war in 1914 and the consequent entry into the war of Italy on May 24, 1915, the construction of the Duilio initially stopped: many workers left for the front, the raw materials were very expensive and difficult to supply, in addition he feared that the ship, once completed, would be requisitioned by the state for military use.
But two years later, in 1916, the ship was launched. That same evening, the Duilio was towed from Sestri to the Molo Giano in Genoa to begin the construction, but it would be almost another eight years before finally seeing the Duilio again sail the sea.
The first trip that the Duilio will make is on 30 October 1923 to New York, starting the ocean life of the Duilio, making the "sun route" famous for North America.
The Duilio was subsequently requisitioned by the state in 1941 to repatriate Italian soldiers from the Horn of Africa, ending the operations in Trieste. Here, in July 1944, both ocean liners were hit by Allied bombers. The Duilio, which was located in the Muggia valley, will burn for two days. It remained half sunk in place for years, until it was demolished in 1948.

Il medaglione appartiene alle memorie private della famiglia Vallarella- Fossa, discendente da nonni italiani provenienti dalle province di Bari e Parma, emigrati in Argentina nella città di Rosario.
Il 28 luglio 1913 il cantiere navale Gio. Ansaldo&C di Sestri Ponente, riceveva l’invito della Navigazione Generale Italiana a concorrere alla fornitura di un transatlantico celere per la rotta Genova-Buenos Aires. Da questo progetto nascerà il Duilio, un piroscafo di 22.000 tonnellate di stazza, oltre il doppio di qualunque nave passeggeri mai costruita in Italia, la più grande del mondo sulla rotta del Plata, ammiraglia delle flotte mediterranee.
A causa dello scoppio della guerra nel 1914 e della conseguente entrata in guerra dell’Italia il 24 maggio 1915, la costruzione del Duilio inizialmente si fermò: molti operai partirono per il fronte, le materie prime erano carissime e difficili da approvvigionare, in più si temeva che il piroscafo, una volta ultimato, venisse requisito dallo Stato per usi militari.
Ma due anni dopo, nel 1916, la nave fu varata. La sera stessa il Duilio venne rimorchiato da Sestri al Molo Giano di Genova per iniziarne l’allestimento, ma sarebbero trascorsi quasi altri otto anni prima di rivedere finalmente il Duilio solcare ancora il mare.
Il primo viaggio che farà il Duilio è il 30 ottobre 1923 con destinazione New York, facendo partire la vita oceanica del Duilio, rendendo famosa la “rotta del sole” per l’America del Nord.
Il Duilio fu successivamente requisito dallo Stato nel 1941 per rimpatriare i soldati italiani dal Corno d’Africa terminando le operazioni a Trieste. Qui, nel luglio 1944, entrambi i transatlantici vennero colpiti da bombardieri alleati. Il Duilio, che si trovava nel vallone di Muggia, brucerà per due giorni. Rimase semiaffondato sul posto per anni, finché venne demolito nel 1948.
